Androgyny

I'm really on an androgyny kick lately, not that I don't like it usually, but I'm hooked on The L Word and I can't stop watching it on Youtube. And, Shane! The style, the hair, everything. I'm loving her, but then again who doesn't? She inspired me to start looking for some pictures of good androgynous looks. I like these, but the creepers are doing nothing for me. I always thought shoes should be about sex, but maybe its refreshing to see shoes that say you don't give a fuck. Sometimes its nice to stomp around. Maybe there's a new direction coming. The lace, the stilettos (I hate that word), drapiness, dainty jewelery. Its gotta go. Sorry, its getting late. I should sleep. That drapiness comment is going to come back and bite me in the ass. What am I even even talking about?

Well, anyways, here's to 2010.

Leeky Leek

My wonderful and talented friend Amy K and I made this! She took the photos, aren't they so beautiful? I'm so impressed. We made this leek and turkey pie with puff pastry on top last night; it was so delicious and we were so full. I want to put puff pastry on top of everything now, it makes it look so impressive. Maybe I'll layer some on top of my next essay, up the page count and make it more attractive to TA marking it.

We got the recipe from Jamie Oliver's show. I think he calls it sweet leek pie. Next time I make this (which will probably be soon) I think I'll add more leeks, they had a really mild flavour. It was suprising how much dirt was inside the leeks, I know cooking shows always say that, but it's true. And, cutting the leeks really hurt my eyes, its probably the onion family's way of revenge for eating so many of their relatives.

New (ish) song, so pretty and so catchy. Love the imagery in the video and Charlotte is as beautiful and French as ever.

The Joys of Styrofoam

I've talked about siu yeh before, the decidedly Cantonese midnight meal. When I was a kid I always imagined I would have a cool boyfriend that would bring me siu yeh when I would have to stay up late at home. Usually I imagined he would bring me Portugese chicken, which I don't even think exists in Portugal; or maybe something from Cafe de Coral.

But anyways, this post isn't about my imaginary Chinese boyfriend. It reminded me of how much I loved opening a stack of hot white styrofoam take out boxes (sorry Al Gore) full of greasy cheap resturant food preferably after 11pm. It just feels so warm and decadent in a weird way. So when I saw Take Away as I was browsing the Colette online store. I thought what a great idea for a book, and I bet it has lots of yummy pictures.

Pearl

The lovely + intriguing Mata Hari! I'm definitely getting a Lady Gaga Bad Romance vibe from this.
I just started watching Freaks and Geeks and am totally addicted to it now! James Franco is so cute. Crinkle face smile!

Pooh!

How cute is this dude? I found it on Life archives from a series about the people who keep unconventonal pets. Some people even had lions. I want one, just imagine touching their pawzies!

Cauliflower

A beautiful bunch!
I think I'm going to add more random photos I like on here from now on. This winter break I'm staying in Toronto, and since I've been slacking off for most of the break, I really have to hustle for the last few weeks to get everything I planned to do for my thesis collection. So it's draft, sew + repeat from now on. Oh! And I went to Telio today to check out their fabric, they have some nice stuff. I'm ordering a grey mesh and some thick knits for pants.

Fam

That's my mom, dad and I eating siu yeh in Hong Kong in the late 80's. I'm pretty sure this was at the resturant underneath our buiding when we lived on Bailey St.. I love the Chungking Express vibe + my dad's expression is priceless.

One of my roommates just asked me if I caught the game.
What?
I'm pretty sure that's the first time in my life anyone has asked me that.

Are you going to watch New Moon next month?

This is What Heaven is Like.

You have to watch this! Like, literally, if you like cupcakes and hot Korean hunks, this video will make you sweat, wet! I have no idea what they are saying, but it's a language I understand. The guy at 0.46 seconds is my favourite. Oh yeeeeah, throw in a hot French guy in band. Yummy pastries! "Mmmmm" noises. Boy giggles.

AND THEN BAM! 4 GAY KISSES at the end! How did I not see this coming? Still, I can appreciate it.

Chicky chicky mo mo.

All I Wanted, Was a Room with a View

I was just reading the plot line for The Silence of the Lambs on Wikipedia, and thump! I turned around and looked at my window, there in the middle was a brown little birdish thing... Dead? Alive? Human brain eater? Who knows. Lucky for me, my roommate came in and tapped on the window and the poor little thing "flew" away. I guess I'm making one of those bird stickers this weekend.

fashionNOW

With instant information sharing services like Twitter, fashion week is becoming a whole other game. Photos are uploaded minutes if not seconds after a model walks down the runway, images of fashion show from Milano, Paris and New York are being distributed at almost instant speed to anyone who is interested in fashion via the world wide web. It seems like the public no longer needs the elusive invitation to attend these exclusive shows, but it remains to be shown if this democratization of information will continue as sites like Twitter are still relatively new. It seems like a great opportunity for budding fashionistas in small towns and fashion students to catch a slice of the exciting world of the big 4 Fashion Weeks.

Above is a photo from the Rick Owen's collection posted on twitter during the show.

The Bitch is Back

Did anyone catch the beginning of the new Hills this week, when Lo, Auds and Steph were talking about Kristin in the beginning. They were talking about how she puts the ho in horrible. And Lo's example was "that girl stands up for herself", like that's a bad quality in a person nowadays. Later the threesome spilled the beans to Auds, how much money does MTV spend on eyeliner? Somewhere in the world, an eyeliner factory is exploding due to these three's impossible power of defined eyes.

Another highlight was when Heidi said "This is like a porno pad" well now, you are living in a porno pad. Do the right thing, make a celebrity porno that gets leaked online, so I can watch it for free.

By the way, I in no way wish to turn this into a The Hills blog, by hey, it's a blog update.

During Couture Week this season I tried to stalk some shows, fail! This is where the Maison Martin Margiela show was happening. I got as far as the white lab coated greeter at the entrance. She wouldn't even let me take a picture of her.

Jester Style

Such adventurous and fun style. Model, Tati, at Url Pickens.

Black Layers

I met Shu Pei at the Url Pickens' show, I was her dresser. She was so sweet and friendly. Originally from China, she is now living in NYC. After the show, she was off to a shoot with Vogue China.

Beautiful models at the Url Pickens show a few weeks ago. Look at those hands.

La Fart de NoWay

Frickin' cutest cat in the world, there was a bunch of new little kitties at La Ferme de Noé. The kitties and the girls I volunteered with were the only redeeming qualities the place. Don't go there. The death witch of Melanoma runs the place.

These were the girls I volunteered with: Esther (what the heck happening to Esther in this photo? She's from Toronto, you can see her in the picture below), Ashley, Shana (from Kansas) and Jenny (from Belgium). Here we are enjoying the national drink of Trets (the town closest to the Fart, just under an hour walking), Monaco, its beer, limonade and strawberry syrup.

As there was no bus out of Trets on Sundays, picnicking became one of my favourite activities on the Sabbath day.

Beach

The exciting thing about beaches in France is that you can take your top off, air out your tits a little bit. Last weekend I was in Marseille following my incarceration at La Fart de NoWay (more on that later). Such a great bustling city, but it was unbearably hot and the sun was releasing all the piss smells baked into the rocks. The only way to escape was into th Mediterranean Sea, and escape I did, hoping unto the 9am ferry, I landed on the beautiful island of Frioul.

Looks like the Louis Vuitton don was also on the ferry.

These trees were really neat, I've never seen anything like them, it seems like they were growing out of aloe plants.
I tried to touch some cactus, I got stabbed and ended up with a bunch of splinters in my finger.

Ps. I don't know why the pictures are so blurry, if you click on them it gets better.

Funky Town

I want to dress like this, on and off stage.

Right now, I'm in Marseille, in my hostel you have to be buzzed in. I think its a bad part of town. Alors, its a great hostel and the cheapest place I could find in this beautiful and buzzing city. If you are ever in town, try to stay at Vertigo. Friendly staff and great decor.

I'm Leaving Today

I'm leaving for France today, please, try to take care of yourselves. If the universe conspires with me during the next two months, I will try to turn this blog into a frequently updated travel blog. Until now. I leave you with this.

Before there was Apple.

Before there was Apple, there was Dieter Rams, for Braun.

His 10 Commandments of Design are a timeless measure of good design. His theories are concise and inspiring, and my personal philosophy of design do not deter far from his. Honesty, is a theme I have constantly tried to communicate whenever I sit down and begin to design a garment.

Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic. Details, subtle shades, harmony to achieve an equilibrium of whole.
Good design helps a product be understood. Intuitive designs that are self-explanatory and eliminate the need for
an operating manual.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is durable.
Good design is thorough to the last detail.
Good design is concerned with the environment.
Good design is as little design as possible.

Forget Snuggie, that polyester for sale on tv bullshit, save up 300 dollazzz and get yourself a brand-name, fancy Blankoat. Its Grim Ripper gone glam and Canadian. Obviously, Grim is all trendy and doesn't like that sweatshop business, so this is made in Iceland with Icelandic wool.

Pop music inspired by Cindy Sherman, while wearing Margiela? It probably can't get much better, the Earth might explode.

Thank the Modernists

Thank them for all those hideous buildings in Toronto. Yes, you, brown Fifth Element Sears building on Jarvis and you, large curved bookend City Hall!

I'm sick of learning about Modernist Design and their affinity for clean, geometric forms and their use of modern materials or their use of plains surfaces articulated by abstract manipulation of light and shade. Bulldoze that shiiiiiit! No, actually, don't, I'm going to Canoe on Sunday, housed in one of Mies van der Rohe's works, the Toronto Dominion towers. Really, I usually appericate the legacy of Modernist works, but I'm just sick of studying and I just really want to pass my History of Design mid-term on Sunday. Dear ghosts of Le Corbusier, Piet Mondrian, and founder of Bauhaus please let me pass this test.

Burger Date

Real burgers with my fake fiancee Kait, over in her Eastside hood, the historic Cabbagetown in Toronto. Gourmet Burger, the semi-new joint has been blogged about all over town and after hearing good reviews from all her housemates I couldn't wait to try it. And, no, they don't have poutine, don't ask.
I got the Aussie burger: a Canadian farm raised beef patty complete with sliced beets, fresh pineapple and a fried egg on top. Double the protein (not that I work out). Although the take-out oriented storefront was a bit small, with minnial seating, the smiling friendly staff more than made up for it. Next time I'm going to try the sweet potato fries and old fashioned milkshake.

Wrapped like a little present.

Wear White On Thursday

As an extra-curricular activity this Christmas, I remade two outdated and abandoned wedding dress into one fabulous show-stopper for the modern bride, and all this for charity too! The charity is called Windfall, they are a clothing bank providing new basics to needy people in Toronto, and if you have ever experienced a -30c Toronto winter, you know this service is much needed. So, to support, wear white this this Thursday and donate to Windfall charity. 13 other dresses redesigned by other students will be auctioned off, with the proceeds to Windfall charity.
The creations are on display at Bayview Village in the East Court until midday February 1st. For more information, visit http://www.ww4w.ca/

Play With Your Food

So, I like videos with food and stop animation. Learn how to make spaghetti with everyday toys.

Grape Drank

I'm definitely getting one of these for my next house. Included in the $30,000 price tag is the installation of the temperature control system, ability to keep 1,600 bottles of wine, choice of different trapdoors, (glass for the exhibitionist, reinforced steel for the garage and wood for the aesthetes) and of course, bragging rights for being the most James Bondish wine connoisseur.
